About Haor & Char Development Institute
The Haor and Char Development Institute (HCDI) is a specialized institute under Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), established to address the unique challenges faced by the haor and char regions of Bangladesh. These areas are characterized by wetland ecosystems and riverine islands, respectively, and are home to millions who rely primarily on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods. HCDI aims to improve the quality of life in these regions through focused research, sustainable agricultural practices, and the development of environment-friendly technologies. The institute serves as a bridge between researchers and local communities, promoting collaborative efforts at national and international levels to find innovative solutions to the distinct problems of haor and char areas. Its mission encompasses poverty reduction, food security enhancement, and the optimal use of natural resources with minimal ecological disruption. The foundation stone of HCDI was laid on July 22, 2018, by the President and Chancellor of BAU, Md. Abdul Hamid, marking a significant step towards the integrated development of these vital regions.
